India Office,
26th July 1800.
[REG 27 MAY 35,
I am desired by Viscount Cross to
acknowledge the receipt of your letter of the 23rd July,
and to acquaint you in reply that the Nawab of Basoda,
on the occasion of his projected visit to Algiers,
Tunis,
Morocco etc., should only receive from Her Majesty's
Consular Representatives such attentions as would be
shown to any gentleman of rank, who would be recommended
to their good offices, and the letter of introduction
with which the Nawab has been furnished is granted with
the object of securing him a friendly reception by the
local authorities in the places which he proposes to
visit, and to facilitate his inspection of institutions
and buildings of public interest.
It is not intended that public honours
should be accorded to him, and I am to add that no
notification has yet been received of the date of the
Nawab's intended journey.
